Dear Ms. Presnell,
I have enjoyed this class so far, surprisingly. No offense, but when I first walked into your classroom and learned a bit about the class, I thought I would be bored and hate all the assignments. You seemed like one of those teachers who didn’t really care if we did the homework, or even showed up to class. But now that I’ve gotten to know you, I’ve found out that while yes, you don’t really have much control over what we do, except to give us grades, you and your class are very interesting. I really enjoyed the small essays we did at first, because I was allowed to write about something I cared about, which made me care about what I was writing. I really connected with our first essay, the place essay. It made me remember the last time I ever went to my grandmother’s house. It was sad, but I sent the final to my parents and they really enjoyed it, especially my mom. She wants to send copies to her siblings now too, so that they can read it as well.
I also enjoyed the big essay at the end, because it allowed me to expand on my original place essay, which is the one my mom is going to send to her family. It’s probably not the best thing I’ve ever written but it’s a memory of mine, not really a story so I tried to capture the memory part, not the story part. I covered as much as I could remember so I am pleased with the final product. I mostly only did small editing to it to make it better because I was trying to keep it true to the memory, and only added in very small things that I had to make up. I got good reviews but they were more just supportive, as opposed to critical so I had to make my own critique up. I tried to give them a few things to work on in their own essays, as well as the positive stuff.
To be honest, I am not looking forward to this big research paper, though, if you make it as interesting as our previous essays have been, I may change my mind. I am a bit curious as to how you plan to make it interesting though. I suppose we shall see…
Another thing that I’ve enjoyed about this class is the relative lack of long homework. I don’t mind writing essays or reading articles, especially because I take Japanese and a hard Precalculus class that I’m not doing well in. So I really appreciate not having a ton of homework, or having soft deadlines for some things.
I feel like I’ve been able to sort of settle into a routine now, in terms of handling homework and classwork for this class and others now that I sort of have an idea of how much work is involved with college. While it involves many long nights and very little to no sleep, otherwise, I believe that I’m getting a bit better at this whole “college” thing. It’s nice to be able to have some time to myself as well, unlike in high school when we would have 7 classes a day, every day. It has been hard adjusting to living with someone (never had to share a room in my life until now) and I don’t often get enough sleep because of it and having two other suitemates as well definitely adds some tension too. One of my roommates and I constantly battle with what temperature it should be set at in our suite because she is used to arctic conditions while I freeze to death (literally, I change colors; blue, purple, white, occasionally pinkish/red, and sometimes green too) at anything below about 69 degrees. But I suppose its preparing me for the real world (though I hope the real world doesn’t try to freeze me to death!) so I guess it’s good practice. Though, I will be quite glad when I can have my own room/house.
It’s also weird to be so far from home. I’m from Raleigh, the capital, so it’s a two and a half hour drive back home if I need something or want to visit. It’s been pretty hard since I’ve never been far away from home before. Not even sleep away camp, because we never really had the money. I hope to get a job soon too, otherwise I will be swimming in debt before I graduate (well, I will be anyway but that’s beside the point). My parents are older and Momma only works a part time job while Daddy had to retire early and doesn’t currently have a job. So we have a very limited source of income and anything I can do to contribute will help, even if my parents are attempting not to push that on me.
Hope you had a nice break, I got (some) sleep but not enough!
